The Latest on Christian Zionism

A Palestinian’s Perspective on Christian Zionism

August 2025

In January 2024, one of the justices on the International Court of Justice in The Hague voted against ordering Israel to permit food supplies into Gaza. Why did she do this? She was a Christian Zionist. As this example demonstrates, Christian Zionism is more than a theological position; it has immediate humanitarian consequences.

In this article Jonathan Kuttab explains Christian Zionism’s political impact, and he critiques its theological reasoning. He then concludes, “Catholics and others, who would not ordinarily identify as Christian Zionists, often fall into similar patterns of automatic identification with the State of Israel and default support for its positions. Much work needs to be done to correct such bad theology both for the sake of the gospel itself and for the real-life Palestinian victims of that bad theology. Palestinians today are suffering starvation, deprivation, destruction and ethnic cleansing, and are forced to live under apartheid and discrimination as a direct result of that bad theology.”

Jonathan Kuttab is a Palestinian Christian and well-known international human rights lawyer who practices in the United States, Palestine, and Israel. He is a co-founder of Al-Haq, a Palestinian human rights group, and co-founder of Nonviolence International. He also serves on the boards of Bethlehem Bible College and Holy Land Trust. This article was posted in August 2025 on the website of Friends of Sabeel North America.
