Is Anti-Zionism the Same as Antisemitism?
Care must be taken not to jump to the conclusion that anyone who criticizes Israel’s policies and practices is necessarily an antisemite.
Among supporters of Israel, it is frequently said that if someone criticizes the State of Israel then that person is antisemitic. Or to put it another way, someone who is anti-Zionist is also antisemitic. Case closed!
This is a subject that needs to be carefully investigated, and that study needs to begin with the definition of terms. To put it simply, antisemitism focuses on people, while anti-Zionism focuses on a nation. Someone who criticizes, opposes, or attacks Jewish people for no other reason than their ethnicity, background, or religious practice can and should be described as antisemitic. An anti-Zionist, however, is someone who criticizes the nation of Israel because of its policies and practices. Therefore, anti-Zionism must be distinguished from antisemitism.
But can anti-Zionism slide into antisemitism? Can a critic of Israel become so opposed to the government of Israel’s actions that she or he slowly learns to hate all things Jewish? Yes, that can certainly happen, but care must be taken not to jump to the conclusion that anyone who criticizes Israel’s policies and practices is necessarily an antisemite.
Antisemitism must be condemned as the evil it is, but false charges of antisemitism must also be recognized as misleading and malicious.
